The Head Ball Coach kicks off the year with the inaugural college football game of the season. This year with the NCAA digging into South Carolina the Gamecocks might be a little distracted when they kickoff tonight at 6:30 on ESPN.

Still no word from the NCAA however Weslye Saunders had been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules earlier.

Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram had arthroscopic surgery this morning on his left knee after hurting his knee late in practice on Monday. According to Gentry Estes of the Mobile Press Register, Ingram will be out for Saturday’s game against San Jose State and evaluated on a week-to-week basis after that. Alabama hosts Penn State on Sept. 11 and visits Duke on Sept. 18.

Coach Saban said this morning’s minor surgery was successful and performed by Dr. Lyle Cain and Dr. James Andrews.

“It was a situation where everyone involved thought it would be better to take care of now, so he would not have any issues with it later in the season,” Coach Saban said. “We have full confidence in our medical staff and we know the doctors and athletic trainers will do an outstanding job in taking care of Mark and assisting him in his rehab. Mark will definitely be out for this week’s game against San Jose State and we will manage this on a week to week basis beyond this week. We will make every decision in the future based on what’s best for Mark and his career as we consult with Dr. Cain and Dr. Andrews on his progress. This is not an injury that will affect Mark’s future ability to make a full recovery in a relatively short time frame.”

Trent Richardson will step into the starting role for this weekend’s game with redshirt freshman Eddie Lacy becoming the backup.

As his mother lay dying in her Birmingham home, Marcell Dareus couldn’t cope. He had to get away.

It was the middle of May. Spring classes at the University of Alabama were over. Summer classes and football conditioning didn’t start until early June.

Along came an invitation from a friend to fly to Miami. The chance to hang out in South Beach sounded good, so off Dareus went to chill in the sun, sand and warm water.

Dareus attended the party but claims he was lured to Miami under a false pretense, a source close to the family said. When Dareus discovered there were agents at the party, he asked to leave. Then he received grim news that his mother, Michelle Luckey, had died, and he abruptly returned to Birmingham.

The friend who arranged the trip was Marvin Austin, a star defensive lineman at North Carolina, a source close to the Dareus family said. Austin appears to be a central figure in a growing NCAA investigation into possible improper dealings between agents and college football players.

When Dareus made a recruiting visit to North Carolina during his senior year at Huffman High School, his host was Austin, then a freshman. The two players bonded.

As Alabama rolled last fall toward an undefeated season, Austin said if the Crimson Tide won the national championship, he would pay for a trip for Dareus anywhere, a source close to the Dareus family said.

The plane fare to Miami was paid for by Austin, but when Dareus arrived in Miami, he paid Austin for the ticket and received a receipt, the source said. Austin also arranged for a hotel room, but the source said Dareus did not use the room.

Last week, when reports surfaced about Austin’s possible involvement with agents, Dareus was urged to call Alabama coach Nick Saban, a source close to the family said. The player and coach met late Sunday morning.

On Monday, Dareus met with Mike Ward, Alabama’s associate athletic director in charge of NCAA compliance, the source said.

Dareus has told Alabama officials that he was the only Crimson Tide player who made the trip to Miami, the source said.

Yesterday the NCAA informed Georgia that they would be coming to Athens to interview football player(s) in connection to the ongoing investigation of the South Beach Party!

The rumors of star wide receiver AJ Green attending the party are not true. Green has told Coach Richt, the NCAA and anyone who asks him that he has never been to Miami. However at Media Days he just gave a “no comment” when asked if he had ever been to Miami.

This morning at Media Days Charles Bloom, head of public relations for the SEC, told reporters that the NCAA had asked that no one from Georgia discuss the inquiry until it is complete.

And now  the 3rd Saturday in Blogtober is reporting that Mark Schlabach is confirming that Dareus’ ineligibility may not be permanent. 3SiB sumerizes Schlabach’s quote writing:

the gist is that he went to a party at Austin’s prompting (and possibly his expense), and when he got there, he realized what was up and he left.  If so, it’s a 3-4 game suspension for being stupid enough to go, but he gets credit for leaving before a serious violation occurred.  If Schlabach is correct, Dareus will have to pay back the cost of the ticket down there and sit for a bit.
