SEC Offensive Player of the Week

Cam Newton,

Quarterback, Auburn

In his Auburn debut, Newton rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns while completing 9-of-14 passes for 186 and three scores in Auburn’s 52-26 win against Arkansas State. Newton also accounted for 357 total offensive yards and five touchdowns, both highs in the SEC in Week One. His 171 rushing yards were a school single-game rushing record by a quarterback, breaking the previous mark of 160 held by Phil Gargis in 1974. The rushing total were the most in a debut by an Auburn player since Rudi Johnson’s 174 rushing yards against Wyoming in 2000.

SEC Defensive Player of the Week

Danny Trevathan

Linebacker, Kentucky

Trevathan had a game-high 11 total tackles, including nine solo stops, in Kentucky’s 23-16 win at Louisville. His 11 tackle total was tied for the second-highest in the SEC in Week One.The Wildcat defense limited Louisville to 102 yards of total offense in the first half, while taking a 20-6 halftime lead.It was the third double-figure tackling performance of his career. His 3.5 tackles for loss are a career high.

SEC Special Teams Player of the Week

Patrick Peterson

Cornerback/Return Specialist, LSU

Peterson set an LSU record with a combined 257 combined yards on kickoff and punt return yards in the Tigers’ 30-24 win against North Carolina.The game marked Peterson’s first as the Tigers’ primary return specialist. The 257 yards ranks as the second-highest total in SEC history.

SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week

T.J. Johnson

Center, South Carolina

Johnson was awarded a game ball by the South Carolina coaching staff following the Gamecocks’ 41-13 win over Southern Miss. He was making his first start at center after playing exclusively at right guard in 2009. The Gamecock offensive line allowed Carolina to produce 449 yards of total offense – 224 on the ground and 225 through the air – averaging 6.9 yards per play.

SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week

Jaye Howard

Defensive Tackle, Florida

Howard accounted for five total tackles (three solo stops) including 2.5 sacks in Florida’s 34-12 win against Miami (Ohio). Howard anchored a defensive line that allowed just four yards rushing on 22 carries. The longest rushing gain from scrimmage for Miami was 9 yards. The 2.5 sacks were for a total loss of 17 yards and was the first multi-sack performance of Howard’s career.

SEC Freshman Player of the Week

Tyler Russell

Quarterback, Mississippi State

Russell completed 13-of-16 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns in Mississippi State’s 49-7 win against Memphis.The four TD passes tied a school single-game record. In his first series, Russell led the Bulldog offense on a seven-play, 91-yard drive for a touchdown. He started the second half completing six straight passes for 109 yards and two TDs as State opened up
