Florida Football Update 8/27

Pat Dooley of The Gainsville Sun writes that the Gators have become a Dynasty in the new SEC (from 1992-present) and then crunches some numbers to prove it.

Redshirt Sophomore Deonte Thompson has separated himself from the other receivers and will be Tebow’s go-to-guy this season.

The defensive line of 2009 is much deeper than it was in 2008.

Tebow’s durability has been amazing but unfortunately he isn’t made of steel.

The Fort Myers Miracles changed their “What would Tim Tebow do?” promotional night to “What would T.T. do?” after receiving a cease and desist email from the University of Florida. The “What would T.T. do?” promotional night was Wednesday night against the St. Lucie Mets. According to The Gainsville Sun, a ceremonial jump-pass started the game and fans received promise rings and watched a character called “T.T” try to walk across water.

Tebow laughs off the GQ pictures but his dad didn’t like the title. One thing Tebow isn’t about is belittling God and Tim’s dad Bob Tebow was “miffed by the mocking and sarcastic tone” of the article.

Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel thinks that Tim Tebow is poised to become the all-time best.

The Sporting News loves Florida and Tim Tebow. Tight End Aaron Hernandez is a key part of the Gators offense. Last year he had 34 catches for 381 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Maurkice Pouncey returned to the practice field Tuesday.

Senior safety Dorian Munroe who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, had his knee scoped Monday to repair his meniscus. Munroe will be out for 5 to 6 weeks.

Defensive tackle Brandon Antwine is ready to get back on the practice field.

Defensive line coach Dan McCarney is more confident in the DLine than head coach Urban Meyer.

Running backs coach Kenny Carter thinks the Florida offense will be just as potent without Percy Harvin as it was with him last year.

In other Tebow news. Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has claimed that Charlie Ward was a better quarterback than Tebow. Here are some stats to compare the two.

Since enrolling early in January, linebacker Jon Bostic has been picking up the plays quickly.

Urban Meyer said that Tuesday’s practice was a tough one.

Injury Update: Wide Receiver Carl Moore and Cornerback Jeremy Brown underwent medical procedures to repair back injuries. Defensive End Justin Trattou returned to practice after missing one week with an ankle injury. Safety Major Wright practiced Tuesday with no contact and Matt Patchan is back at full speed from a concussion. Offensive lineman James Wilson is out with a sprained foot and freshman wide receiver Andre Debose is still slowed by a hamstring injury.

Offensive linemen Jim Barrie and Byran Jones will not be back with the Gators. Barrie suffered a career ending knee injury and could be brought as a student assistant. Jones plans to transfer to another school.

University of Florida President Bernie Machen and Coach Urban Meyer spoke at the 39th annual UF Joint Civic Club Luncheon, held today at the Paramount Plaza Hotel in Gainsville.

Wide Receiver Riley Cooper returns to the team and didn’t miss a beat in Saturday’s scrimmage.

The SEC is expected to release the final version of its new media policy today. Let’s hope there is a change to the ban on social media from college stadiums. Maybe they should take a lesson from the Big Ten who clearly get social media.

Cover Coaches of SEC Football

It seems that several SEC coaches were asked to “strike a pose” for Sports Illustrated. I knew about Nick Saban’s. I had no clue that Lane Kiffin, Urban Meyer, and Houston Nutt each had their own cover too!

I was a little shocked when I saw Urban Meyer’s and Houston Nutt’s covers. I guess it just wasn’t what I expected. Evidently, Coach Meyer and Tim Tebow were shocked too!

“That has to be the most ridiculous cover photo ever,” Tim Tebow told the Gainesville Sun. “How’d they convince him to do that?”

“The guy took like 20 pictures, and at the end, he said, ‘Hey, just one time, can you take a picture with your glasses?’” Meyer said with a smile. “I said, ‘No, I’m not doing it.’ He said, ‘C’mon, it’s just for me.’ ‘OK, one picture.’”

“And that’s the one they used.”
